Betwixt You and Me
The works of Gabriele Rothemann and Michel Sauer appear on their surface to be very different and yet they are related on a deeper level. Rothemann acts as an artist who primarily expresses herself through the medium of photography, but not exclusively. Drawing and sculpture also frequently interact. Sauer is primarily an object artist operating in the field of abstraction as well as in the world of figuration, and he too makes use of other media, such as painting, in addition to his sculptural domain.
Both have known and appreciated each other for many years, teach or taught at art academies, but are geographically far apart from each other, so that artistic exchange is only sporadic.
Both have a great empathy towards things. They include the rational as well as the sensual level of perception in their artistic considerations. Everyday objects are captured in their material magic and transformed in the creative process.
Irony and humour paired with a profound appreciation of natural and cultural creations are noticeable in many of their works.
Mythology and archetype may have laid the common ground for these oeuvres, which for the first time enter into dialogue in this exhibition in Vienna.

Betwixt You and Me
Die Werke von Gabriele Rothemann und Michel Sauer wirken oberflächlich betrachtet sehr unterschiedlich und sind doch auf einer tieferen Ebene verwandt. Rothemann agiert als Künstlerin, die sich primär über das Medium der Fotografie äußert, aber nicht ausschließlich. Auch Zeichnung und Skulptur treten häufig in Interaktion. Sauer ist zuvorderst Objektkünstler im Feld der Abstraktion genauso wie in der Welt der Gegenständlichkeit und auch er bedient sich neben seiner plastischen Domäne anderer Medien wie zum Beispiel der Malerei.
Beide kennen und schätzen einander seit vielen Jahren, lehren oder lehrten an Kunstakademien, sind aber räumlich weit voneinander getrennt, sodass ein künstlerischer Austausch nur sporadisch erfolgt.
Beiden ist eine große Einfühlsamkeit den Dingen gegenüber gegeben. Sie beziehen die rationale wie die sinnliche Ebene der Wahrnehmung in ihre künstlerischen Überlegungen mit ein. Gegenstände des Alltags werden in ihrer dinglichen Magie erfasst und im Schaffensprozess transformiert.
Ironie und Humor gepaart mit einer grundlegenden Wertschätzung gegenüber den natürlichen und kulturellen Hervorbringungen sind in vielen ihrer Werke spürbar.
Mythologie und Archetypus mögen den gemeinsamen Urgrund für diese Oeuvres gelegt haben, die in dieser Ausstellung erstmals in Wien in einen Dialog treten.
